Sofia
“Ever growing, never aging” This motto is written on the Sofia coat of arms. Sofia is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. Like a meeting place of the four directions of the world, tribes came and went, civilisations flourished and declined but the city stayed forever.
There are many archaeological sights in Sofia that display the city’s diverse history, the town gates and towers of Serdica, public buildings and streets thousand of years old. A large part of the ancient city of Serdica is underneath important modern buildings. The ancient city council is hidden under the Sheraton Hotel, a number of Basilicas are below the Palace of Justice, and the Roman residence elaborate mosaics are below the Rila Hotel.
Over 250 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments are part of the city scape of the Capital.
Today Sofia is a modern and busy capital, centre of Bulgaria’s political, economic and cultural life. The harmony between the past and present day lends to the city’s unique charm.
Sofia has many interesting attractions which reflect the country’s diverse history. Most notably the Alexander Neviski Momorial Church, St Sophia Church, National History Museum, National Art Gallery, National Theatre and Nezavisimost Square to name but a few.
Of an evening you will never be short of things to keep you occupied. Sofia has a fantastic night-life. Clubs and bars are plentiful and located in the centre of town all in one place for a great night out.
For those looking to relax, Sofia has many green areas which offer peace and tranquillity in the heart of the city. All major parks have paths for those wishing to stroll or bike. A great place for recreation is the Vitosha National Park, just south of the Capital, where people can enjoy hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. |
