Shoumen
The town of Shoumen is situated at the eastern mouth of Shoumen Plateau. It is 380km north-east of Sofia, 115km south-east of Rousse, 90km west of Varna. A regional administrative centre. There are regular bus lines from Shoumen to Varna, Rousse, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Silistra, Karnobat, Pliska, Preslav and other smaller towns and vvillages in district. Shoumen is an important railway station on Varna- Sofia railway line.
There are wonderful venerable beechtrees, numerous alleys, rest homes, tourist routes and Boukatsite Mountain Hut (5km away from Shoumen and 3km from the village of Osmar, there are medieval monastries cut in the rocks). Some 15 km east of Shoumen is the unique Madara Historical-Archaeological Reserve consisting of several sights of exceptional value. First of all, this is the rock bas-relief of the Madara Horseman- an amazing historical place visited by thousands of tourists. |
