Obzor
Published on: 13/03/2007The town of Obzor is situated at regular intervals between Varna and Bourgas and is 6 km to the south of the town
of Byala. Its population is slightly over 2000 people.
Obzor is one of the oldest Black Sea settlements. The first name of the town was Navlohos. Later, it was known
as Heliopolis (town of the sun) an in Roman times it was given the name of Tempium Jovis (Jupiter`s Temple).
Romans also built up a fortress which became a part of the lands of a boyar, named Karvun in the Middle Ages
and was famous to the Bulgarian people as Kozyak. Nowadays, in the small park of the modern town, are exposed
remains of tiges, capitals and statues of the Roman Jupiter`s temple.
Obzor is a sea resort, its beach trip is over 7 km long. Hotels and plenty of private lodgings can be found.
A lot of cozy restaurants and hospitable taverns offer real culinary masterpieces.
There are three camping sites between the town of Byala and Obzor - the Luna, Prostor and Slantsa camping sites.
The Emine cape is located 14 km in south of Obzor. There are located a lighthouse and remains of the ancient
Bulgarian fortress Emona, famous for being the birthplace of the Thracian king Rez who participated in the Troy
war according to Homer’s "Iliad".
