Pomorie

Published on: 02/05/2007
18 km to the south of Nessebur, 18 km to the northeast of Bourgas, 408 km to the east of Sofia is located the sea
resort Pomorie, numbering 14 500 habitants. It is situated on a narrow and rocky peninsula, bordered by the sea- on
the one side, and by the Pomorie lake that in fact is a large Laguna - on the other.

It is an ancient town, established in the 5th century BC under the name of Anhialo. It was a colony of the ancient
town Apolonia (the present- day connecting Sozopol) and was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Salt trading and
wine - growing were well - developed and the town was famous for its healing mud Laguna. In the XIII-XIV centuries
it was a sea port, supporting the export trading of honey, wine, wool, wax, wheat. In the period of the Ottoman
rule the town kept its importance as a big seaside center. A spontaneous fire almost destroyed the town in 1906,
only few ancient houses have been preserved in the east part of the town. The great Bulgarian poet Peyo Yavorov
lived in Pomorie during 1899 - 1900. Then he wrote one of his best works. On the place he used to stay staring at
the sea is erected a monument.

Today Pomorie is one of the most beautiful Bulgarian sea resorts. It has a wide beach strip with fine sand which
is almost black here and there. The beach is a winner of a "Blue flag"- a prestigious international award
for environmentally clean resorts. Neat hotels and houses such as the esplanades for walks make the resort an
ideal place for a great vacation.

The town appeals to the tourists with its mud- cure sanatorium where the healing features of the lake`s mud
are used for treatment of neurological and rheumatic disorders.

The production of white and red wines, vermouths, special rakias (a kind of brandy) and cognacs is being
developed and awards from different contests and expositions have already been won.

A traditional festival, called "Yavorov’s days", stages every summer. Places of interest are the "St. George"
Monasteries, dating from 1856, the churches "Jesus Christ", "Virgin Mary" and "Transfiguration". To the south
of the town, near the Europa camping is found a beehive tomb. It consists of a tunnel, leading to round camera
with an empty column in the centre which opens in the upper part as a fungus and passes into the walls.
The tomb is 8 m high and 60 m of diameter. It dates back to the III century and represents an original
combination of a typical Thracian beehive tomb and a Roman mausoleum. The tomb is open to visitors.

There is regular bus and taxi transport service to the town.
