The Balchik Botanical garden and palace
Published on: 16/01/2007
The botanical garden of Balchik is situated in the former summer
residence in the palace of the Romanian Queen Maria.
The garden covers an area of 65 decares. Numerous rare exotic plant and
tree species grow in it. One of the most interesting collections of
more than 250 Cactus and other succulent species covers a total area of
1 decare. This collection is second richest in Europe after the
collection in Monaco.
In the botanical garden, there are many exotic and rare trees such as:
rubber, sequoia, gingko, magnolia etc. Around 2000 different plant
species grow in this unique garden.
The “Tihoto Gnezdo” (The silently bird's nest) Palace is
situated near the sea, between three steep shores. The palace is
inaccessible for winds and rich in a variety of flowers, trees and
water. The working drawing for the palace is made by Italian
architects, Americo and Augustino.
A small magnificent palace combining different architectural designs
has been constructed for 11 years. The palace was totally completed in
1947.
The Queen Regina Maria is English by birth. She spent most of her
childhood in Egypt, therefore, the palace combines Roman, oriental and
Christian symbols.
Both the Botanical garden and the Palace in Balchik are among
the most popular tourist spots in Bulgaria. They host numerous cultural
events and expositions.
